Well, we have reached the middle ground of the NHL off-season and with 66 days left until the start of the 2011-2012 regular season... there really isn't much to talk about in terms of the NHL.com pun-filled front page headlines. In fact, the summer is the time of year we here at The Royal Half take a little hiatus and say "see ya later" to the NHL.com pun headlines.
You know, the constant work we do each week collecting the best and worst NHL.com pun headlines can take a toll on our old bones. We've really reached our limit.
And since it's summer... sometimes we want to be relaxing on the couch with the AC on full blast... and sometimes we want to be at the beach soaking in the sun.
But, overall... I think a lot of people are worried that they'd have to go a whole summer without enjoying some sort of NHL.com pun headline related activity. And I'm here to put those concerns to rest.
That's right! We've decided to start a Pundays Playoff... where your favorite NHL.com Pun Filled Headlines battle it out each week until a Pundays Champion is crowned. And the best part of all... you decide the winner!
We are doing this NHL Playoff style... there will be 8 Pun Headlines from the West and 8 from the East. Each week, you'll vote on your favorites and the ones with the most votes will continue on to the next round until we have 1 Pun Headline from the West and 1 from the East. Then... they will battle it out in the ultimate Punday Cup Final.
This week we will start off in the Western Conference with 8 amazing NHL.com pun headlines that I feel are all contenders for the best Punday of the Year.
Look, I make no qualms about being a completely biased Los Angeles Kings fan. But I feel like our first pun headline entry in the West from December 4, 2010 appeals to both the passionate hockey fan... and the crazed wrestling fan.
Next up, from our neighbOUR to the north... comes an entry first seen during the Stanley Cup playoffs on May 19, 2011. How no one has made a t-shirt of this yet I have no idea. Oh shit... someone already has! Well, at least this is money well spent.
The 3rd entry is one I've loved since I first saw it on March 21, 2011. If you are fan of Chicago sports legends and marginal offensive defensemen... then this pun headline is for you!
There is no truth to the rumor that floating around the NHL newsroom during Game 7
was a "Camp-Oli Goat!" pun headline.
Imagine for a moment that you loved Russians and Italians. If so, then April 16, 2011 would have been an amazing day for you.
Believe it or not, Philadelphia Flyers goaltender, Ilya Bryzgalov, once played for the Phoenix Coyotes. And the great folks at NHL.com love using Bryz in pun headlines. Like in this one from March 30, 2011.
Ahh, October 28, 2010. The Colorado Avalanche have 9 points... only 3 behind the Northwest Division leading Calgary Flames. And Daniel Winnick scores 1 of his 11 goals.
Is there anything better than making fun of Roberto Luongo's last name? Yes... watching him get humiliated by the Boston Bruins during the Stanley Cup Finals on June 13, 2011.
And finally... this was a tough one... there was "Glory Toews." There was "Toews of Our Lives." There was "Raves for Toews." But for my money... nothing beats a pun headline that combines Captain Serious with Cole Trickle.
There you have it. The 8 best (in my opinion) Western Conference NHL.com Pun Headlines from the 2010-2011 NHL season. Next Monday, we'll feature the top 8 from the East. But until then... vote below as early and as often as you want. The top 4 will make it onto the Punday Cup Semi-Finals.
