I'm not saying that the Los Angeles Kings were starting to believe their own hype over the past week, but Thursday night against the St. Louis Blues the team seemed to come into Staples Center wearing rose-colored glasses.
Why do I get the feeling Bob Miller was also wearing a gag handshake buzzer?
According to Jersey Brian, The Royal Half's resident half-Irish, half-Jew, after last night's game he figured out where the Kings "O" went...
Kings 0, Blues 4, Irish and Slovenians Everywhere... Insulted
I understand why the Kings came out for warm-ups wearing St. Patrick's Day Themed Jerseys. The jerseys will be auctioned off for a great cause. But what I don't understand is the need to sell single-day-specific merchandise to fans that only benefits the Kings bottom line.
Jack Johnson is as about American as you can get.
Even I'm not gonna touch this one.
Doughty better realize that's not a doughnut in front of his name.
I bet they had no idea that the "O" in O'Quick would stand
for the giant fucking hole in his pads all night.
I still think the Kings are not marketing to the right ethnic group. I mean, this is Hollywood... and there are WAY more Jews than Irish.
Maybe for the game on Passover?
This game was a complete and total stinker. That was easily the worst I've seen this team play since the All-Star Break. Even the magic powers of having Alexei Ponikarovsky in the lineup didn't help.
STAT UPDATE: Now 0-1 in games with Ponikarovsky wearing a green jersey.
I don't know what makes me barf more... that stat or that jersey.
It could be worse. We could be St. Louis Blues fans.
I didn't realize this game was being played in New Orleans... in 1987.
One person who had some choice words for the fans of the Los Angeles Kings last night was Coach Murray.
“You know what the most disappointing, frustrating thing was? At the end of the second period, we were booed off the ice by our fans. That is the most embarrassing thing I have ever been through. That’s the worst I’ve ever been through, in all the years I’ve been coaching. I’ve been behind the bench almost 3,000 hockey games in the NHL, and booed off the ice by your own fans at the end of the second period, here after this road trip, going 4-0 in hard places, very disappointing.”
I'd like to imagine Coach Murray looked like this while giving his post-game conference.
Don't make Murray angry.
I was watching the game on the East Coast using NHL Gamecenter from my laptop and even I could hear the boos throughout the game. Probably some of the worst I've ever heard watching the game on tv. I'm in the camp where if you are a loyal fan and you've paid for your ticket and you've bought some of the teams crap merchandise... then you have every reason to boo if you want. And if you don't want to boo... then don't. If it were me, and I was watching a team playing at home that had just come off a 4 game road trip that had basically saved their chances of being in the playoffs... I don't think I would have booed... I would have been pissed off and disappointed, but not enough to shower with boos. Cikiri over at LA Kings Outsider has some choice words back for Coach Murray...
"Cant wait until they introduce Coach at Saturday night's game. I know what I'm going to do. U cant call out paying customers."
"Go ahead and boo me punk... I dare you."
It's interesting that the LA Kings video site doesn't feature this part of Coach Murray's comments about the fans. But Rich Hammond did. Just shows you that Rich is able to operate apart from the franchise most of the time. Plus, it's not like Coach Murray said the fans were in a "choking situation." I mean, who would be dumb enough to do that? The Blues game should be wiped from the Kings memory. This hockey team has bigger fish to fry. Starting Saturday against the Ducks at Staples.
