Sometimes, words just can do justice. Instead... we use polls!
Obviously, it's Kyle Clifford's mean streak.
"I like winning... a lot."
Kings 5, Islanders 1
Well, I'm finally back in Los Angeles after a week-long trip to the East Coast and the thing that surprised me the most seeing my beloved Los Angeles Kings back in action was how few New York Islanders fans were at this game.
Sweet spelling job there with Islanders by the way.
No really, Half Season Ticket Holder Buddy said that he saw more Toronto Maple Leafs jerseys all night than Islander ones. And I only saw one Islander jersey the whole night.
"Really, it's bad enough you are wearing your autographed Blake Comeau jersey...
but now you are making me pay for the pretzels? We're breaking up."
Generally I dread when East Coast teams come to Staples Center, because with Los Angeles being a commuter city filled with sports fans from back east, it ends up feeling like you are at a home game for the opposing team. Saturday night at Staples Center just proved my theory that all the obnoxious, in-your-face New York hockey fans are from Manhattan, not Long Island. Trust me, I've seen some god awful Los Angeles Kings teams over the past 20 years play each night, but this Islanders team was one of the worst professional hockey teams I've ever seen play. There was no heart, no working hard to get the puck... and most of the players looked like they didn't even enjoy being in each others company. This team gave up near the end of the 2nd period and it reminded me of exactly how bad the Kings were once... oh say 3 years ago. Sure, as Kings fans, we might be all quick to jump on the New York Islanders and talk about what an embarrassment they are... but since the lockout in 2005, these teams haven't been that different.
Islanders 175 W - 202 L - 50 OTL
Kings 193 W - 186 L - 46 OTL
Obviously, the Kings are headed up in a big way and the Islander could be headed up... to Winnipeg or down to Kansas City. But remember, there is one more thing these two franchises share in common.
It just looks right, doesn't it?
The other thing that really stood out to me during the Kings 5-1 dominating victory over the New York Islanders came with just under 5 minutes left in the 3rd period. Fans... Kings fans, started leaving the building. I can't remember the last time people left a Kings game with 5 minutes to go in the 3rd... and the Kings were ahead. Now, I know that Los Angeles sports fans get a bad rap for leaving sporting events early... but it's usually when their local team is losing. You all know me well enough to know that Half Season Ticket Holder Buddy and I will never leave a Kings game early... even in 06-07 we stuck it out to the bitter end... but there was almost something satisfying about watching people in Kings jerseys pour out of Staples Center early simply because they knew this team had it wrapped up.
Who ever feels like this team is finally reaching its potential, raise your hand.
So once again, the Kings are off until Thursday of next week... oh, what?... you don't say? Well, it seems that the Kings for once won't have a 4 day break between games and will instead be forced to play in San Jose on Monday. Man, the NHL is really trying to keep this franchise from becoming one of the NHL's best! How is this team supposed to win without 4 days between each game?!
