You would think that the biggest news in the Los Angeles Kings' world today would be the important Game 5 against the Vancouver Canucks that goes down tonight at 7pm. But no, instead everyone is talking about the announcement that 20 year old Drew Doughty has been nominated for the Norris Trophy, the annual award for being the NHL's best defenseman... also known as the Nicklas Lidstrom award.
Yup, this guy is one of the NHL's best defenseman.
Drew is the youngest to be nominated for the Norris since this guy was in 1968.
I have a feeling that Drew read Boys' Life growing up. And still does.
And of course, Drew Doughty is the first Kings defenseman to be nominated for a Norris Trophy since this guy won it in 1998.
Wait... are they saying "BOOO" or "DREEW"???
I thought that I would take a look back at some of the things I said about an 18 year old Drew Doughty during his first season with the Kings... back at the old Royal Half Blogspot blog. (Mainly because I've been too lazy to transfer everything over to here.) To see what this humble blogger said about Drew Doughty from the early days... check it out after the jump!!!
From the first game of the season in 2008, a 3-1 loss to the San Jose Sharks.
"So Jason LaBarbara lost 10 pounds this summer? Is that why the Sharks hit 4 posts? Maybe he should put those pounds back on. Jarret Stoll looked horrible. Imagine how he'll play when his girlfriend Rachel Hunter is in the crowd. Brad Richardson is the Brian Willsie of this current Kings team. And 18 year old Drew Doughty played like an 18 year old would against Joe Thorton and Dan Boyle.... he looked lost and tentative. The Kings seem really high on this kid, but I hope they don't make a mistake in rushing him. Anyone remember Aki Berg? Yeah, me neither."
Man was I wrong… about Brad Richardson. (Seriously though, have any of you seen a player elevate his game in the last 2 months of a season more than Richardson has? The guys impresses me more and more each night.)
A few weeks later on October 21st, 2008, Drew Doughty scored his first NHL goal and McLovin from SuperBad was there to see it.
"And 18 year old Drew Doughty's first NHL goal showed why he was drafted 2nd overall last year. It wasn't so much the goal itself, it was the confidence he showed waiting at the blueline for his teammates to get onsides first before he went in for the score. A great goal, especially after getting schooled earlier in the game by Ryan Smyth."
Whatever happened to that Ryan Smyth guy?
Also from that same posting...
"And you are officially a team leader when you pick up the puck from the net after a rookie scores their first goal. Anze Kopitar... you are a team leader. A 21 year old picking up an 18 year olds first NHL goal."
And just one month into the NHL season, Drew Doughty was already leading the Kings in ice time each night.
"Ladies and Gentlemen... there are 60 minutes in a regulation hockey game. Tonight, versus the Dallas Stars, 18 year old rookie Drew Doughty played 27 minutes and 5 seconds. By my calculations, that is nearly half the game. We, as fans, are getting the rarest of opportunities to witness something special here. He just keeps getting better and better each game."
"I use Statcounter so that I can get a sense of where all 6 of my readers are coming from. And one of the bonuses is that you can see what Google searches people have made to end up at your blog. Over the last 2 weeks, I have received an alarming amount of searches based upon the dating habits of 19 Year Old Drew Doughty and previously unknown to me country superstar Taylor Swift. These were all unique IP addresses, so there seems to be quite a number of people out there searching for an answer to this pressing question. I've looked around on the internet to see if there is an answer, but apparently TMZ doesn't seem to care about the Los Angeles Kings and the dating habits of its rookies."
Pretty sure none of these guys touched Taylor Swift.
Or any other woman for that matter.
And just because… my favorite Drew Doughty post of all time. Act Like You've Been There Before. And a special Thank You to Marc Crawford... for making the Kings the 2nd worst team in the NHL during the 2007-2008 season. We owe you big time.
Congrats to Drew Doughty, an Olympic Gold Medal and a Norris Trophy Nomination in one season. Just remember... it means absolutely nothing if you don't go out there tonight in Vancouver and win. Just remember that, Drew.
